In 2023, we completed the installation of a new closed-loop cooling water system at our Port Hope conversion facility, eliminating the need to use surface water for once-through cooling purposes. It’s just one of the ways we’re reducing our water use. https://www.cameco.com/about/sustainability

Despite multiple setbacks, Cigar Lake mine began production in early 2014, using the jet-boring technique pioneered by Cameco specifically for its challenging geology. The mine has now produced 150 million pounds of uranium concentrate. “Looking back, there were times of uncertainty and sleepless nights wondering if we could make the machine perform as designed. Fortunately, we had an amazing team of professionals from many different backgrounds who persevered and made the JBS what it is today,” mine general supervisor Dylan Probert says.

In June, Cigar Lake reached a major milestone in its contribution toward energizing a clean-air world – by producing its 150 millionth pound of uranium concentrate. “150 million pounds is no small feat,” general manager, Kirk Lamont says. “It feels like routine work to the people on site and at Cameco as we are lucky enough to have these amazing tier 1 assets, but what we do here in northern Saskatchewan is not done anywhere else in the world.”
