McArthur River Recognized For Exceptional Safety Performance

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, May 12, 2015

Cameco (TSX: CCO; NYSE: CCJ) was recognized for outstanding safety performance by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) for the second consecutive year on Monday.

CIM’s prestigious John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy for the best safety performance in the metal mine category in 2014 was presented to Cameco’s McArthur River mine. McArthur River has worked 4.7 million man hours without a lost-time injury.

“Our people are committed to safety, and that commitment to ensuring a safe workplace for themselves and their team members is being recognized with a second John T. Ryan award in a row. It’s certainly something to be very proud of and I thank our employees and contractors for their efforts,” said Tim Gitzel, Cameco’s president and CEO.

This is the fourth time McArthur River has won the national John T. Ryan award. The others were in 2000, 2009, and 2013.

“At our mine we have built a safety program where people are encouraged and expected to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of each other. With a strong safety culture we can achieve great things,” said McArthur River general manager Kevin Quesnel.

Overall, Cameco delivered strong safety performance in 2014.  Eight of 10 Cameco operating sites had no lost-time injuries (LTI) in 2014 and a number extended their LTI-free performance to multiple years.  This includes the Blind River refinery (eight years), Cameco Fuel Manufacturing Inc. (three years), and the Port Hope conversion facility (two years), the Key Lake mill (two years) and the McArthur River mine (two years).  The injury rate among contractors working at Cameco facilities also declined in 2014.
