Cameco's operations recognized for outstanding safety performance

Members of the McArthur River operation
Members of the McArthur River operation receive the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallury and Petroleum's John T. Ryan national safety trophy for best safety performance in the metal mine category.

Safety is a core value shared at all levels across Cameco. Our commitment to maintaining safe and healthy workplaces is reflected in the many awards and accolades we receive for our safety performance.

2010

On May 10, 2010, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) recognized two Saskatchewan operations for outstanding safety performance.

With only one reportable injury for 756,990 working hours in 2009, McArthur River received the prestigious John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy, while Cigar Lake was given a Special Certificate for reporting only one injury for 717,932 working hours. Cigar Lake also earned Cameco's top safety prize, the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green (MJMG) award in 2010 for impressive safety performance during extended, non-routine underground recovery work at that site.

In Ontario, Port Hope and Cameco Fuel Manufacturing each achieved one million hours without a lost-time injury (LTI) – a tremendous achievement.

2011

2011 was another notable year for safety at Cameco operations. Cigar Lake reached two full years without a lost-time injury (LTI), while Crow Butte mine celebrated four years with no LTIs and the Blind River refinery five.

Crow Butte was also the recipient of Cameco's 2011 MJMG award. With an excellent safety record dating back to 2008, Crow Butte's performance is truly exceptional. Having worked 734,000 hours with an LTI frequency of 0.0, a medical frequency of 0.5, and a severity rate of 0.0, it's easy to see why this operation took the award home. Crow Butte also succeeded in achieving a total recordable injury rate (TRIR) of 1.1 in 2011 – putting them in the top quartile for safety performance in the US metal mining industry.

Kazakhstan

Overseas, our JV Inkai ISR mining operation in Kazakhstan has maintained an exemplary safety record. Inkai has received Cameco's MJMG award twice in five years, due in part to their innovative safety controls and monitoring systems. In 2009, for example, Inkai's construction crews achieved over three million hours without a lost-time injury and completed over 1.8 million hours with a combined lost-time injury and medical aid frequency of just 0.2.

Cameco takes the utmost care to ensure the health and safety of our employees. These achievements across our operations demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, and the value of our investments in health and safety.
