Clean Environment

Approach

At Cameco, the protection of the environment is one of the highest corporate priorities during all stages of our activities, including exploration, development, operations, decommissioning and reclamation.

We implement comprehensive ISO 14001 certified environmental management systems across all of our operating sites, which are supported by a corporate environmental management program that outlines the operating requirements sites must meet. Certification to the ISO 14001 standard is important as it is the world’s most widely utilized and recognized environmental standard. Our environmental management system encourages and promotes continuous adaptation of our practices based on new information and technologies, and provides all our sites with the following direction as it relates to environmental management:

  • establish objectives, targets and plans that are consistent with our safety, health and environmental quality (SHEQ) policy, and that are based on identified significant environmental aspects
  • implement the plans
  • monitor and measure performance
  • continually improve on activities and controls to achieve the SHEQ policy commitments

We check our performance through monitoring corporate and site-specific key performance indicators, environmental monitoring programs and non-conformance corrective and preventative action programs. We use the information from all of these programs to help us to identify opportunities to improve.

Water Discharge
We are committed to discharging water responsibly in the areas we operate to ensure that risks to the receiving environment comply with and move beyond legal and other requirements, and are as low as reasonably achievable.
Tailings and Waste Rock
Our primary goal is to reduce the amount of waste we generate and to divert as much as we can by reusing, recycling or recovering material that would otherwise go to a landfill or other permanent waste storage.
