Our Approach to Sustainable Development

Cameco is one of the world’s largest uranium producers. We want to bring the multiple benefits of clean, safe and reliable nuclear energy to the world, and are committed to delivering our products responsibly.

For us, sustainable development is a management philosophy and process that helps us:

  • build trust, credibility and corporate reputation
  • gain and protect community support to operate and grow
  • attract and retain employees
  • manage risk
  • drive innovation and continual improvement to build competitive advantage.

Our goal is to be recognized globally as a leader in corporate social responsibility by proactively addressing the social, environmental and financial aspects of our business. Rather than viewing sustainable development as an “add-on” to traditional business activity, we see it as an integral component to the way we do business. We aim to integrate sustainable development principles and practices at each level of our operations, including featuring them in our objectives and our approach to compensation. We do this by integrating sustainable principles and practices into every level of our company – from our overall corporate strategy to every aspect of our day to day operations.

We use four measures of success, supported by effective governance and our values, to guide all of our planning, decision making and evaluation processes.

Does this mean we’re sustainable? We see our sustainable development programs and reporting as a work in progress. The needs of our stakeholders will continue to evolve, as will our own awareness of them and the possible strategies for action.

Our commitment is to continue to engage and work with our stakeholders to make sure we stay abreast of evolving sustainable development issues, innovations, concerns and challenges.
