CROW BUTTE
The in situ recovery extractive method is environment friendly because:
- once operations are complete, groundwater is restored to regulatory standards
- no waste or tailings facility is required
- surface lands are easily restored to original state
The state of Nebraska requires Cameco to provide a reclamation bond sufficient to assure that, no matter what, there is money to restore water and reclaim the land when mining is done. At present, the bond for Crow Butte totals $28.9 million.
Radiation
Workers at Crow Butte on average are exposed to less than 10 percent of the radiation dosage considered acceptable by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Employees who work in radiation areas wear dosimeters that measure their cumulative exposure from all radiation sources on the property.
