While managing the impact of the company's activities on the environment is one of our strengths at Cameco, we continually strive for improvement.
We recognize environmental management and the protection of the environment as among our highest corporate priorities. In 2000, Cameco adopted a new environment policy and have introduced a new environmental management system (EMS).
The EMS commits each of our operating sites to the development and implementation of a formal system which addresses the immediate and long-term impacts of its activities on the environment. The system includes written materials such as programs, plans and procedures, as well as the allocation of resources, the assignment of responsibilities and the training of employees.
The program, plans and procedures set out minimum requirements to be undertaken to meet environmental and safety responsibilities and to demonstrate sound and consistent performance wherever we operate. The program provides for ongoing reviews of how well the EMS is working and how well we are meeting environmental performance expectations.
Each employee plays an important role in making the EMS a success—by taking action in everyday activities—in preventing spills, complying with regulations and procedures, preventing pollution and striving to continuously improve performance.
The EMS assists the company in ensuring its compliance with environmental laws—whether those are international, national, provincial, state or local.
