Cameco creates opportunity for bright students by providing an extensive scholarship program and investing in our future. The program offers more than $130,000 in direct support of students each year.

Canadian Scholarships

Cameco Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Scholarship

Cameco Corporation is committed to increasing opportunities in the mining, mineral process and nuclear energy industry. In order to promote employment growth in the identified industries, Cameco has a scholarship to encourage pursuit of select engineering disciplines.

Annually, up to six, $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to second year mining and mineral process engineering students at select post-secondary institutions. Students pursuing mining or mineral process engineering at the following institutions in Canada are encouraged to apply:

  • Dalhousie University – Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • Université Laval – Québec, Québec
  • Ecole Polytechnique – Montreal, Québec
  • McGill University – Montreal, Québec
  • Queen's University – Kingston, Ontario
  • University of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
  • Laurentian University – Sudbury, Ontario
  • University of Alberta – Edmonton, Alberta
  • University of British Columbia – Vancouver, British Columbia

The renewable portion of the financial award will be extended to previous recipients in their third year of studies. It is important to note that previous receipt of a Cameco scholarship does not guarantee automatic renewal of an award as students must still meet all identified scholarship criteria.

The Russell W. Thompkins Memorial Award in Mining Engineering (funding partner)

Established in memory of Russell W. Thompkins, distinguished and admired Emeritus Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Mining Engineering, in recognition of the valued contribution he made to the safety of the uranium mining industry. Awarded on the basis of financial need and overall academic accomplishment to a student in the fourth year of a Mining Engineering program. Preference will be given to students who have made a positive contribution to the Mining Engineering Department and to the University through extracurricular activities.

Cameco provides funding to support one scholar per academic year.

Saskatchewan Scholarships

Bernard Michel Scholarship

The Bernard Michel Scholarship provides support for a Saskatchewan aboriginal student entering their second or third year of study within the College of Engineering or College of Arts & Science. Arts and Science students, to be eligible, must be pursuing the following degrees:

  • B.Sc. Geology
  • B.Sc. Geography
  • B.Sc. Biology
  • B.Sc. Computer Science
  • B.Sc. Toxicology
  • B.Sc. Chemistry
  • B.Sc. Physics
  • B.Sc. Environmental Sciences

The total award value includes two $5,000 scholarships over a maximum of two years, renewable once for a total potential award of $10,000 per student. Renewal eligibility is based on successful academic promotion as determined by College regulations and maintaining full-time student status. Recipients are guaranteed summer employment with Cameco following their first award.

Applications will soon be available for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Cameco Aboriginal Scholarship in Business

This scholarship is to recognize and promote academic excellence among Aboriginal students who have completed the second or third year of their program in pursuit of a bachelor of commerce (B.Comm) degree at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan. Preference will be given to residents of Saskatchewan's Northern Administrative District. One annual scholarship of $7,000 will be awarded.

Cameco Corporation Scholarships in the Geological Sciences

This scholarship covers the costs for one year of study, which includes tuition, student fees and books, for full-time students who are Canadian citizens studying geological sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. Two scholarships are available for students entering their first year of study and two scholarships are available for students entering their second year of study. Recipients of the continuing awards may also be offered summer employment at Cameco after their second and third years of study with time off to attend any field camps required for their degrees.

Students are advised to consult with the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan for further information and course requirements.

Cameco Corporation Scholarship in Engineering

To recognize academic achievement of undergraduate students who are pursuing a bachelor of science (B.Sc.) degree in engineering with an interest in metallurgy and mineral processing in the mining industry.

Candidates must be pursuing a B.Sc. in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or geological engineering at the University of Saskatchewan and entering their third year of study. This scholarship consists of two annual awards of $5,000 each, renewable once students successfully register for fourth year of study for a total potential award of $10,000.

Preference will be given to chemical engineering students. Candidates must submit a letter outlining their interest in the mining industry, including any previous work experience.

Cameco Corporation SIAST Centennial Merit Scholarship

This annual award of $2,500 is intended to promote academic excellence and to support a Saskatchewan student in the power engineering program at SIAST Kelsey campus.

Northern Scholarship Program

The Northern Scholarship provides support for northern Saskatchewan students entering a university degree program, trades or technical training at a recognized technical institute. Applicants must be residents of Saskatchewan's north and have lived in the north for a minimum of ten years or half their life preceding the date of application. Academic performance, community involvement and career interest are considered in the selection process. Applicants who wish to pursue a career in the mining industry are favoured.

Scholarship winners must provide Cameco with the following no later than August 31 in the year in which the scholarship is awarded:

  • written acceptance of their Cameco scholarship;
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
  • a recent photograph to be used at Cameco's discretion.

Canada, Australia or United States Scholarships

Cameco Employees' Dependent Children Scholarship

Dependent children of Cameco employees who are either beginning their post-secondary studies in the fall of 2013 or are already enrolled in a post-secondary program are eligible for a scholarship of up to $2,500. Applicants are assessed based on evidence of community service, participation in extra-curricular activities and academic performance. Recipients are limited to a maximum of four annual Cameco awards.

Applicants must include all contact information on the application form and submit a copy of the application along with their most recent secondary or post-secondary transcripts by the application deadline. A reference is also required to complete a section of the application form.
