COMMUNITY
Cameco's 2009 Northern Tour wrapped up on December 1 following nine community visits beginning on November 17.
Project Updates and Discussion
Cameco invited community members to hear updates on current mine operations and exploration projects for the 2010 winter program. Community members and leaders for Pinehouse Lake and Patuanak were invited to an additional workshop to review the Key Lake Revitalization and Millennium projects.
The tour team included Cameco northern affairs staff as well as staff from some of the minesites and the corporate office in Saskatoon.
In addition, representatives from the Ministry of Environment and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) – two of Cameco's regulatory bodies – provided brief presentations.
Grade twelve students in each community prepared a meal and provided a talent show prior to the formal presentations. Each evening included an opportunity for audiences to ask questions and make comments on the company's activities in the north (questions and comments are being transcribed from audio to text and will be available in mid-January).
At the end of each program, community members had the opportunity to meet individually with the presenters and view the new Cameco travelling display.
Special Presentations
Gary Merasty, vice-president of corporate social responsibility for Cameco, and newly elected Chief Guy Lonechild, Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN), were on hand in Fond du Lac for a special presentation that recognized all of the employees from the community who work for Cameco and its contractors.
As well, the Athabasca Working Group joint donations for a new arena project ($100,000) and a completed summer playground project ($20,000) were presented to Chief Napoleon Mercredi (Fond du Lac Denesuline First Nation) by Mr. Glen Lafleur (AREVA) and Mr. Walter Smith (Cameco).
It was also a special day in Black Lake as Cameco representatives met with Chief Donald Sayazie and his council. Walter Smith, manager of northern affairs for Cameco, presented an initial cheque to Chief Sayazie for the planning stages of their proposed alcohol and drug treatment centre, a first for the Athabasca Basin communities.
