CNSC approves guidelines for Vision 2010 environmental assessment

(CNSC news release)

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved the guidelines for the Vision 2010 environmental assessment (EA) and will recommend to the Minister of the Environment that the EA continue as a comprehensive study.

This decision was announced in a Record of Proceedings, Including Reasons for Decision, which was released on Monday, December 8.

The next milestone in the EA process will occur when the Minister of the Environment decides whether to accept the CNSC's recommendation. If the Minister accepts that a comprehensive study is the appropriate track for Vision 2010, the project cannot be "bumped up" to a panel review at a later date.

Work on the technical studies required for the EA is underway. All technical studies are expected to be completed in 2009, with acceptance of the EA likely to occur in 2010.

The Record of Proceedings is available upon request to the Secretariat of the Commission. It will be available on the CNSC website at a later date.
