May 2006 — Chris Leavitt, president of Local 13173 of the Steelworkers of America, joined by fellow Cameco employee Charlene Clarke, spoke to approximately 30 grade 8 students at Dr. M.S. Hawkins Senior Public School about the importance of staying in school.
As part of Junior Achievement ESIS Week, Chris and Charlene helped the students to define success and to determine the level of income they would require to sustain a lifestyle that would match their definition of success. The exercise showed students that education, including some form of post-secondary education, provided more opportunities to achieve the lifestyle that the students felt they wanted to enjoy as adults.
Chris and Charlene shared personal stories about they types of jobs the have held over the years and the various expenses associated with different stages of their lives. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions about Cameco
In completing feedback forms on the presentation, students had the following comments: “There are more job opportunities available with an education”.
“It influenced me to stay in school because it will be hard to get a good paying job if you don’t”; “Well I was gonna drop out after grade 12, but I think I should go on to college”.
