Fire safety and emergency response
On-site fire drill
Members of Cameco’s Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Extensive training, effective engineering and rigorous monitoring help to prevent fires and industrial accidents at the Port Hope conversion facility. Cameco has an extensive emergency response organization involving approximately 70 people who are trained and ready to respond to any type of emergency. There has been an on-site emergency response team (ERT) at the conversion facility since 1976. The team has the training and the tools to respond to incidents requiring first aid, defibrillation, firefighting or chemical cleanup. Many of our ERT members also serve as volunteer firefighters helping to keep Port Hope and other local communities safe.

Cameco has committed significant resources to enhancing the capabilities of its ERT. Among the actions Cameco has taken:

  • On-site fire drill
    An on-site fire drill with the Port Hope Fire Department.
    Increased the size of the ERT to 47 members
  • Increased the size of the emergency medial team to 21 members
  • Committed to ensuring that a complement of ERT members is on site at all times
  • Created the position of emergency services co-ordinator
  • Purchased a fire truck
  • Purchased additional equipment including a thermal imaging camera
  • Installed additional sprinkler coverage
  • Provided training in hazardous materials response to members of the Port Hope Fire Department
