Cameco's top priority
ZPI Safety
An employee at Cameco Fuel Manufacturing.

Health and safety is a core Cameco value. It is built into our corporate culture in every way. Our commitment is quite clear. The company’s safety motto is: “There is no job that is so important that we cannot take the time to do it safely”.  The health and safety of our employees and local residents is a priority and it shows in our outstanding safety performance.

Cameco has a formal health and safety management system (HSMS), which ensures a standardized approach to managing health and safety issues. In addition, there is a joint employee/management health and safety committee.

Our health and safety program includes:

  • Protecting workers and local residents by assessing, evaluating and controlling all chemical, biological, radiological and physical health hazards in the workplace
  • ERT Community Outreach
Cameco employee and volunteer firefighter Brian Bernard shows a young man how to properly wear a respirator.
An occupational health nurse is at the Port Hope conversion facility during the week
  • A company doctor is at the Port Hope conversion facility one day a week and available for consultation for all Cameco employees at other times
  • Annual or biannual physicals to identify any changes in employees’ health
  • An ongoing urinalysis program to measure uranium and fluoride uptake
  • Annual lung counts for all conversion facility employees
  • Promoting awareness about health risk factors, both on and off the job, through a Live Better program
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory and industry codes and practices

The Port Hope conversion facility and Cameco Fuel Manufacturing are both regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The CNSC monitors our activities to ensure that we are in compliance with relevant health and safety standards.
