The Port Hope conversion facility has an extensive monitoring program in place to measure environmental impact. |
At Cameco, we recognize that there are questions in our community about the impact on the environment from the operation of our facilities in Port Hope. Protection of the environment is a top priority for Cameco. For example, our environmental management system commits our Port Hope facilities to a system that addresses the immediate and long-term impacts of our activities on the environment.
The Port Hope conversion facility and Cameco Fuel Manufacturing are both regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The CNSC monitors our activities to ensure that we are in compliance with environmental standards. Both facilities must provide a quarterly compliance report to the CNSC as well as appear before the commission for licensing.
On a quarterly basis, the Port Hope conversion facility provides an environmental status report to the Municipality of Port Hope, which outlines the facility’s environmental performance over the previous three months.
We also comply with international standards. The Port Hope conversion facility is registered under the ISO 14001 program, an internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems.
