Community Investment Priorities

Cameco Capitol Arts Centre new logo

Cameco's annual community sponsorship budget is focused on the following areas of support: youth; education and literacy; heath and wellness; and community development. Since 2006, Cameco has increased the number of organizations it supports in Northumberland County to over 75. In 2007, the following events and organizations were among those that received support from both Cameco and Zircatec Precision Industries, (a Cameco company):

  • We completed our contribution of $300,000 to the Capitol Arts Centre to help the facility eliminate its mortgage and get on a sound financial footing. In recognition of this gift, the complex, which houses the Capitol Theatre, the Sculthorpe Studio Theatre and the economic development and tourism office of the Municipality of Port Hope has been renamed the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre, effective January 2008, for a period of seven years.
  • Employees at Cameco’s Port Hope conversion facility raised $74,000 for the Northumberland United Way and Zircatec employees raised $40,000
  • We contributed $3,000 for four scholarships at Port Hope High School. They were awarded to the top two students in combined chemistry and physics, and the top two students in computer science
  • A two-year, $75,000 commitment was made to the Port Hope Public Library to help the library board repay a loan from the municipality for recent renovations and assist with the creation of a reading garden
  • A research chair position was created at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), which strengthens the relationship between researchers at the university and Cameco

Cameco continued to participate in the Community Booster Club through which industry sponsorship allows non-profit community groups to advertise their events for free on local radio stations.
