Lester B. Pearson College News Release
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, April 24, 2002
Victoria, BC: Ashley Dubnik, a 17 year old student from La Ronge, Saskatchewan, has been awarded a two-year merit scholarship to attend Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Victoria, BC. In September, she will join 200 other students representing each Canadian province and territory and 83 other countries to participate in the College's International Baccalaureate programme.
To ensure that students are selected on personal merit, without regard to financial background, all students attend Pearson College on full scholarships. Ashley Dubnik's opportunity was made possible thanks to a generous contribution from Cameco Corporation, Cogema Resources Inc., Mudjatik Thyssen Mining Joint Venture and Northern Resource Trucking Ltd., who have pledged $150,000 to create three two-year scholarships. Ashley is the second student to benefit from this gift. The first was Real Carriere of Cumberland House, who graduates this spring.
"We are pleased that another northern Saskatchewan resident will have the opportunity to benefit from this unique, advanced education experience," said Julia Ewing, Cameco's northern affairs manager. "We wish Ashley all the best as she develops her leadership skills while interacting with students and teachers from around the world."
Pearson College was established in 1974 as Canada's tribute to Lester B. Pearson, the late Prime Minister and Nobel Prize winner. The College's mandate is to promote international cooperation and understanding and to provide its students with a challenging academic foundation in an environment where adventure and a sense of service are fostered.
