From the beginning of time, dance has united people.
This year, it has also united Saskatoon and Saskatchewan's corporate community, which has come on board in record numbers for Cameco Dare to Dance 2001 - TIME WARP, which is scheduled for Nov. 10 at Saskatoon's Centennial Auditorium. A Taste of Cameco Dare to Dance will also be held in Moose Jaw at the Cosmo Seniors Centre on Oct. 28.
"This show is an incredible event that needed financial support to bring it to yet another level of professionalism and give it the production value it deserves. We set out on a mission this year and we couldn't have imagined the support we have received from the corporate community," said artistic director David Connolly.
For the first time, the show has a title sponsor in Cameco Corporation, which has signed on for a two-year deal.
“Although our company does business around the globe as the world's largest uranium supplier, we are committed to being involved in our community,” said Bernard Michel, Cameco's chair and chief executive officer. “We are proud to support an expanded version of this exciting program which combines youth, music, cultural groups and professional dancers in a show unique in Canada.”
Dance Saskatchewan Inc. has also received a $10,000 donation from RBC Dominion Securities, and annually receives support from Saskatchewan Lotteries. In addition, the show has tripled its media support for 2001 with help from presenting sponsors Global Television, the Star Phoenix, Magic 98.3. The Saskatoon Foundation is supporting the first-time appearance by Kids in Motion - a group of dancers who live with spina bifida. Other major sponsors which have been with the show for several years include Terra Communications, Uniglobe, Ultra Print and SaskTel and the Beef Information Centre as well as new sponsors Impact Marketing, Sentinel, The Odean Restaurant and Nite Club and The Portables.
"What that does is it gives us the flexibility to expand the program as we have for this year," said Connolly. "And although we've always been pretty sure there wasn't an other event like this in the country, by expanding it and making it a night-long event, we can confidently say there is definitely nothing like this anywhere else."
This show, which is unique in Canada and has been produced by Dance Saskatchewan Inc. for the past nine years, brings together dancers of all ages, all genres, and all cultural backgrounds. The show brings together a cast of over 300 dancers from across the province. The repertoire includes tap, jazz, ballet, cultural groups, hip hop, modern and everything in between. It's a celebration of dance that crosses studios, geography, and politics to allow Saskatchewan dancers the experience of a lifetime.
This year, with outstanding support from the corporate community, the show has expanded to include a lobby show, Silent Auction and VIP reception, moves on to the gala show, and finishes up with Infinity, the all-ages party in Centennial Hall.
"We've made this an event - from the first minute to the last-minute," said Connolly. "What happened was the Spirit of the night outgrew the capacity of two hours in the theatre, so we had to find a way to channel the energy and talent to other places to realize the full potential of what had been created."
Tickets for Infinity are being sold separately. Tickets for both Cameco Dare to Dance and Infinity are available at the Centennial Auditorium Box Office.
Cameco Dare to Dance is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Saskatoon's Centennial Auditorium.
