Challenge Celebrates Fifth Year

December 4, 2001

The Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race for the Cameco Cup will run for the fifth year February 13 – 18, 2002. The unique Saskatchewan event, a sled dog race from Prince Albert to LaRonge and return, has won a number of awards over the past few years, including recognition from both Saskatchewan and Canadian Tourism. Event Chairman Frank Brooks commented, "The Canadian Challenge is a special event that we think should be a source of tremendous pride for Northern Saskatchewan, in particular the communities of Prince Albert and LaRonge. This is a great opportunity for spectators young and old to experience the only means of transportation available to the North West Mounted Police, the First Nations People, Trappers and Traders, many years ago in Saskatchewan." Brooks added, "It is our intention to re-enact the history of the North through the Canadian Challenge."

It was announced today that Cameco has once again signed-on as the Title Sponsor of the Canadian Challenge. Frank Brooks stated, “We are extremely proud and grateful to have Cameco involved as our Lead Dog Sponsor. Without their commitment, this important event would just not be possible. Cameco is a great promoter and partner in Northern Saskatchewan."

To commemorate the race's fifth anniversary, presented by the Gateway North Sled Dog Association, organizers are inviting the participation of the northern business community through a wide range of sponsorship opportunities that include special perks such as a ride in a dog sled for the first few kilometers of the race. Merchants can get involved through a Promoting Merchant program that includes window posters, souvenirs, and a contest to win a dog sled ride. Sponsorship packages were recently distributed to the Prince Albert and LaRonge business community. Added Brooks, "In order to continue the event well into the future it is important that we attract wide community support and business sponsorship. We think this is a great event for Prince Albert and LaRonge and we need the involvement of the entire community to make this an even better event." Other new promotions including a special Valentine will be announced in January. The intention is to make the fifth year the best one ever!
