Cameco Corporation's Blind River refinery has achieved a safety milestone with a record 10 years without a lost-time accident.
"Our employees are proud of this accomplishment because it reflects a high standard for protecting people," said refinery manager Catherine Green. "Ten years without a lost-time accident reflects 1.7 million hours in which our employees and long-term contractors have worked together safely as a team. Their efforts are the key to the refinery's success."
Bernard Michel, Cameco's chair, president and chief executive officer added, "This exceptional achievement makes the refinery a world leader for safety in the nuclear industry. Our Blind River employees continue to display leadership in making their work environment a safe place."
Cameco will recognize this accomplishment at a reception at the refinery on Wednesday, February 2 when Michel will present the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green trophy to the employees for a achieving the highest level of safety in the corporation.
A lost-time accident is one in which time lost from an injury extends beyond the day of the injury, preventing an employee from returning to work. The last one at the refinery occurred January 25, 1990.
Cameco, with its head office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is the world's largest uranium producer. The company's uranium products are used to generate electricity in nuclear energy plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today.
