Blind River, Ontario, Canada, January 26, 1999
Cameco Corporation's Blind River refinery continues to set the standard for safety not only in the nuclear business, but in industry in general, by achieving exceptional safety records. Today, the employees recorded nine years without a lost-time accident.
"This record demonstrates our employees' commitment to safe work practices and teamwork," said refinery manager Catherine Green.
"The employees refuse to be complacent about safety, even after years without a lost-time accident," Green said. "Our safety programs, which encourage employees to spot problems before starting a job, have become an integral part of our work procedures. The result is an operation free of lost-time accidents."
A lost-time accident is one in which the time lost from an injury extends beyond the day of the injury, preventing an employee from returning to work. The last one occurred January 25, 1990.
Cameco, with its head office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is the world's largest publicly traded uranium company and a gold producer. Its uranium products are used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today.
