Blind River, Ontario, Canada, January 26, 1998
Cameco Corporation's Blind River refinery continues to be a leader in the Canadian uranium industry as it marks eight years without a lost-time accident. The facility is also one of the world's leaders for safety performance in the uranium conversion business.
"Our employees are proud of this accomplishment because it reflects a standard for protecting people," said refinery manager Catherine Green. "If we do an excellent job of working safely and protecting the environment, then we demonstrate that we can do an excellent job at everything else."
Cameco will recognize the achievement at a reception at the refinery Tuesday, January 27. Josef Spross, Cameco's senior vice-president of operations and its chief operating officer, notes that all Blind River employees should be very proud of this record. "Your leadership for working safely within our company and in the Canadian uranium industry is an enviable accomplishment."
A lost-time accident is one in which time lost from an injury extends beyond the day of the injury, preventing an employee from returning to work. The last one at the refinery occurred January 25, 1990.
Cameco, with its head office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is the world's largest publicly traded uranium company and a growing gold producer. Its uranium products are used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today.
