Blind River, Ontario, Canada, January 27, 1997
Cameco Corporation's Blind River refinery continues to set a new safety standard in the nuclear industry year after year. Yesterday, January 26, it achieved seven years without a lost-time accident.
"Our 90 employees are committed to safety and working as a team. They have a proactive attitude which makes the plant a safe, productive and enjoyable place to work," said refinery manager Catherine Green.
Cameco recognized the achievement at a reception at the refinery today. Manfred Neven, Cameco's vice-president of fuel services, noted that the safety record is an enviable accomplishment and one of which the employees should be very proud.
"The safety program works because the employees make it work," said Green. "We encourage everyone to spot problems before starting a job. That's an integral part of our work procedures and we practise it diligently. The result is an accident-free operation."
A lost-time accident is one in which the time lost from an injury extends beyond the day of the injury, preventing an employee from returning to work. The last one occurred January 25, 1990.
Cameco, with its head office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is the world's largest publicly traded uranium company and a growing gold producer. Its uranium products are used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today.
