Blind River Refinery Sets Six-Year Safety Record

Blind River, Ontario, Canada, January 26, 1996

Cameco Corporation's Blind River refinery set a new safety standard by achieving six years without a lost-time accident.

"This remarkable achievement is a tribute to our 86 employees," said refinery manager Bill Carrigan. "Their commitment to safety and to working as a team has made the uranium plant a safe, productive and enjoyable place to work."

Cameco recognized the accomplishment at a reception held at the refinery today with Cameco's chair, president and chief executive officer, Bernard Michel, who noted the safety record was extended through 1995 when plant production increased 14%. Blind River's mayor Vyrn Peterson and chief Larry Boyer from the Mississauga First Nation also congratulated plant workers on this milestone.

"The employees refused to be complacent about safety even after years without a lost-time accident," Carrigan said. "Our safety programs, which encourage employees to spot problems before starting a job, have become an integral part of our work procedures. The result is an accident-free operation."

A lost-time accident is one in which the time lost from an injury extends beyond the day of the injury, preventing an employee from returning to work. The last one occurred on January 25, 1990.

Cameco Corporation is the world's largest publicly traded uranium company and a growing gold producer. The company's uranium products are used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today.
