Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, February 19, 1996
Cameco Corporation's Port Hope operation achieved one year of accident-free performance on Saturday, February 17 at 1:30 pm.
"Our goal is to make this a recurring event," said Manfred Neven, vice-president of Cameco's fuel services division, noting the plant previously recorded one year without a lost-time accident in September 1994.
Lost-time accidents are those in which the time lost from injury extends beyond the day of injury and prevents employees from reporting to work on their next scheduled shift. Cameco uses the number of lost-time accidents as one way of measuring safety performance.
"Safety awareness, safety training and a positive work climate are a few of the factors that have contributed to this accomplishment. Everyone is taking responsibility for plant safety," Neven said, adding the safety accomplishment was achieved during a year when production increased by more than 10%.
The Port Hope production operation, which processes uranium into fuel products, employs 228 people.
Cameco is the world's largest publicly traded uranium company and a growing gold producer. Its products are used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today.
