Nuclear energy applies proven, safe technology that is available now. There are many emerging renewable sources of energy, but the generation capacity of these technologies is limited. Only fossil fuels, hydro and nuclear can reliably meet the baseload electricity needs of modern societies.
Nuclear energy is efficient, extracting a large amount of energy from a relatively tiny amount of fuel. Uranium is a naturally occurring metal that is abundant in the Earth’s crust, and widely found in politically stable regions of the world. This is one more advantage of nuclear power over fossil fuels – it is plentiful, and is produced in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
Considering the continuing dramatic increase in world population and the economic and social progress of developing nations, energy demand is expected to grow rapidly, more than doubling by 2030. Options for energy diversification are limited. Even to meet current energy demand, nuclear power must be a part of the mix.
