Cameco's Port Hope conversion facility is one of only four uranium conversion facilities in the western world.

Primarily, the facility converts purified uranium trioxide (UO₃) to uranium hexafluoride (UF₆) and uranium dioxide (UO₂). These are intermediate products required in the production of fuel for light water and Candu-type heavy water nuclear reactors.

Unionized workers at the conversion facility are represented by the United Steelworkers, locals 13173 and 8562.

Cameco operates the facility under a licence from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, issued in February 2012 for a five-year term.
