PORT HOPE CONVERSION

Summary

Cameco's Port Hope conversion facility is one of only four uranium conversion facilities in the western world.

Primarily, the facility converts purified uranium trioxide (UO3) to uranium hexafluoride (UF6) and uranium dioxide (UO2). These are intermediate products required in the production of fuel for light water and Candu-type heavy water nuclear reactors.

Unionized workers at the conversion facility are represented by the United Steelworkers, locals 13173 and 8562.

Cameco operates the facility under a licence from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, issued in February 2012 for a five-year term.
