BLIND RIVER REFINERY

Community

One of Cameco's key measures of success is supportive communities.

At Blind River, this means supporting good works in our community and making sure our neighbours are up to date on our activities.

As part of our commitment to providing information about our operations to interested parties, Cameco has developed a formal protocol for public information and disclosure for all of its Ontario operations. This protocol meets the requirements set out by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in RG/GD-99.3, Public Information and Disclosure.

Mississauga First Nation

One of our closest neighbours is the Mississauga First Nation. In addition to providing training and work experience for an apprenticeship program and employment opportunities for aboriginal peoples, we work to build partnerships with this vibrant community through support for a variety of events and projects such as:

  • annual pow wow
  • diabetes camp
  • Little NHL (First Nations kids' hockey tournament)
  • Good Choices Day

Community Polling

Cameco Blind River's commitment to the community has not gone unnoticed. Polling in the area to gauge public support and awareness of our operations has yielded positive results.

The 2009 poll, conducted for Cameco by Fast Consulting, found that:

  • 94% of residents are supportive of the Blind River operation
  • 52% are supportive because the operation provides jobs and employment for residents
  • 84% agree that Cameco does everything possible to ensure public safety
  • 77% believe that Cameco makes information about its operations readily available to Blind River residents

Tours

At Cameco Blind River, we want to continue to build on the long-established trust of local residents by opening our doors to the community. We make every effort to accommodate requests for tours, as production schedules permit, and have welcomed over 1,000 visitors per year.

Tours provide an opportunity to find out what happens at the refinery and meet the community members who work there. Staff members are proud of their facility and enjoy sharing it with visitors.
