The Port Hope conversion facility is certified under the ISO 14001 program, an internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems.

The Port Hope facility uses engineered controls such as scrubbers, filters and water treatment as well as administrative controls such as quality control and procedures to protect employees, the environment and the public. An extensive environmental monitoring program covering all site discharges is in place to ensure compliance with regulatory emissions requirements.

Cameco has its own emergency response team (ERT) to ensure that employees and the public are protected in the event of an emergency situation at the facility. The team includes more than 50 employees, who have received specialized training to deal with hazardous materials.

The Port Hope conversion facility reports environmental incidents to regulatory agencies as required by federal and provincial regulations.
