ANGELA
The Angela project encompasses a number of adjacent uranium deposits located near the geographic centre of Australia, 25 km south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
Cameco operated the Angela project from 2008 through mid-2011 under a 50-50 partnership with Paladin Energy Ltd. In mid-2011, the two partners in the joint venture agreed that Paladin would assume control of the joint venture.
Angela and the much smaller Pamela deposit were initially explored by Uranerz Australia, starting in 1972. Activity was suspended due to low uranium prices in 1990 and the projects were placed into a reservation from occupation by the Northern Territory government.
Rights to resume exploration were awarded by the NT government to the Cameco-Paladin joint venture partnership in 2008 and an extensive drill program was initiated in 2009 to confirm the historical resource. As well, the Angela joint venture initiated baseline environmental studies within the project area.
Throughout the exploration and evaluation period in 2009 and 2010, Cameco maintained a project office in Alice Springs and initiated an active communications program with stakeholders in the Alice Springs area.
In November, 2010, the joint venture announced that the project would have a reduced program and budget for the rest of 2010 and the early part of 2011.
The announcement took into account the uncertainty created by a policy statement made the previous month by the government of the Northern Territory that it would not allow any uranium mine to be built in proximity to Alice Springs.
